Point Reyes – A Photographic Wildlife Adventure

Point Reyes – A Photographic Wildlife Adventure – we’ve been to Point Reyes many times in the past thirty years. We encountered such an abundance of wildlife this past September. Point Reyes is located on the California coast about 45 miles northwest of San Francisco.

Olema Campground

We used to love to go camping at a little RV park called Olema Campground. Over Labor Day weekend, we had been in Pleasanton at the time, where it was 106 degrees, and we already had our RV with us. Rick had no interest in going home to face the forecasted 118 degrees. So, we decided to look for places on the coast that had wi-fi. We used to love to go camping at a little RV park called Olema Campground.

We visited Olema Campground approximately 20 years prior. They had space. Off we went. We ended up hiding in the RV the first day because it reached 102 degrees on the coast. This a scarce thing! We got out to take a hike in the late afternoon.

The first trail we took was the Mt Wittenburg trail. This was a woodsy trail with elevation and a little over 4 miles out and back.

The next day we took a drive out to the starting point of the hike to the Pt Reyes Lighthouse Visitors’ Center Trail. This was an easy trail, and we ran into deer who were grazing along the trail. Next we hiked the Elephant Seal Overlook and Chimney Rock trails. We saw many deer and the coyotes who were hunting them.

The next day we went to the other side of the peninsula to the Tomales Point trail. This is a long trail that treats you to Elk and other wildlife all over the point. We saw elk, hawks, egrets, quails, coyotes, bunnies, and deer.

We’re looking forward to returning to Point Reyes soon so we can experience another photographic wildlife adventure!
